There have been a few times since my baby was born that I felt I noticed a drop in my supply. One thing you will learn throughout pregnancy and every part of motherhood is that every body, and baby, is different. So some of these ideas work great for some moms and others don’t at all. You can also check out the book Mother Food if you want to get lots of detailed information on what to eat to help your supply.
Most popular: 1. Have a glass of Guinness…not really my cup of tea…er beer…but a lot of mamas claim great results almost within hours. You can pretty much find any “milk stout” you prefer to get a similar effect. (It is common knowledge that drinking alcohol while pregnant or breastfeeding is not recommended by most physicians, so always check with your doctor and trust your gut.) My understanding and belief is that alcohol is nearly gone from your system 2 hours post drink, so I’m ok with a few drinks a week depending on how old your baby is. You can learn a bit more about alcohol and breastfeeding here.
2. Herbal Tea, there are a few different options on the market, so my choice would be whatever tastes the best and is organic. Most grocery stores carry Earth Mama, Angel Baby, Traditional Medicinals and Yogi Nursing Support tea.
3. Brewer’s Yeast…also not my favorite. You can try adding it to smoothies, protein drinks or in baked goods. It has a strong flavor but works well for a lot of women. Check out my girl Natasha’s yummy lactation ball recipe here.
6. Fennel supplements…available at most health food stores or online, this one works for a lot of the women I’ve talked to. It’s the simplest and one of the cheaper options. Working with a lactation specialist is a great source of support! Make sure you are always drinking lots of water, even more when you are breastfeeding! Our coaching programs help with support as well.
